Even before the pandemic struck, high levels of stress and burnout in health professionals had been amplified by systemic failures of government policy and patients’ ever-increasing expectations. Other factors appear to suggest that healthcare workers, while excelling in taking care of others, might be less attentive in looking after themselves.
This article explores some of the deep and largely unconscious resistance to self-care and explains how self-compassion practices might address the underlying roots of poor self-care and help mitigate seemingly unmanageable stress and burnout.
